What Is the Retail Sales Index
An indicator that indexes the monthly sales of automobile dealers (passenger vehicle segment) and retail businesses, based on a full census or sample survey, to a base year of 2020=100. It's used to gauge private consumption trends. The full-census scope includes large-scale businesses such as department stores, large general retailers, automobile dealers, gas stations, vehicle gas-charging businesses, and chain convenience stores.
Data Notes
- The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's major retailer sales trends measure nominal sales growth, while this index is a base-year (2020=100) index — the two should not be compared directly.
